- One warmer coat if you feel the cold, especially for evenings
- Jeans plus at least one quicker‑drying pair of trousers/leggings
- Comfortable walking shoes or trainers you don’t mind getting wet
- Waterproof boots or ankle boots if you’ll be outdoors a lot
- Warm socks (including a couple of thicker pairs)
- Hat and light scarf for windy riverfronts and hilltops
For Toddlers
- Long‑sleeve cotton tops and a few t‑shirts for layering
- One or two warm jumpers/hoodies
- A raincoat or waterproof shell with a hood
- Fleece or softshell jacket for chilly mornings and late afternoons
- 2–3 pairs of comfortable trousers/leggings (nothing that restricts movement)
- Waterproof or water‑resistant trousers / puddle suit if they like splashing
- Trainers or closed shoes for city days
- Wellies or waterproof boots if you plan park/forest time
- Warm socks and a beanie that covers ears
- Thin gloves (especially if they’re in the stroller for longer stretches)
For Babies
- Long‑sleeve bodysuits and footed sleepsuits for layering
- A warm knit or fleece cardigan that’s easy to take on and off
- Soft hat that actually stays on (ideal for wind near the coast or river)
- Pram suit or bunting for colder days, especially if they’re not walking
- Fleece blanket for the stroller and a lighter muslin for indoors
- Weather‑appropriate stroller cover (rain cover is essential)
- Extra changes of clothes in the day bag – dribbles + rain + snack spills
Rain, Wind and “Four Seasons” Gear
- Compact travel umbrella (though wind on the coast can make it useless some days)
- Lightweight, packable rain jackets for adults and toddler
- Waterproof cover for your backpack or day bag
- Quick‑drying travel towel or small microfibre towel for sudden downpours or muddy park benches
Stroller & Carrier Setup
- Stroller rain cover (non‑negotiable)
- Stroller footmuff or cosy liner for naps on the go
- Baby carrier or toddler carrier for hilly towns and cobblestones
- Clips or carabiners to hang bags or wet coats off the stroller
- Small foldable blanket to use on cold playground benches, café chairs, or floors
Health & Comfort
- Basic medicines for kids and adults (fever, teething, congestion)
- Saline spray and a nasal aspirator for little blocked noses
- Travel‑size hand cream and lip balm – the combo of wind and heating is drying
- Tissues and wipes (I always pack more than I think we’ll need)
Practical Extras
- Spare plastic or wet bags for muddy clothes and wet shoes
- A small line or foldable hanger to dry wet layers overnight in accommodation
- Power bank for phones (helpful when you rely on weather apps and maps)
- Snacks that survive temperature swings: cereal bars, crackers, dried fruit
For Those Sunny Winter Days
- Light sunglasses for everyone, including a toddler pair
- A small tube of sunscreen for faces and hands if you’re outside for hours
- One lighter outfit for each child in case a day suddenly feels like spring
This mix lets me adjust quickly when a cold, rainy morning turns into a bright, mild afternoon – which is pretty much Northern Portugal’s winter personality.
